Senior Golf
The South African Senior Amateur Golf Association (Sasaga) was formed almost 20 years ago with a handful of constituent provincial branches participating as members. Today, it has grown to comprise 14 sub-unions spread to every corner of the country.
It caters for those older senior golfers who have competed at the top level all their golfing lives and still thrive on the competitive arena and for those handicap players who want to improve their game by playing competitively.
Every sub-union stages an Open event, which means that there is at least one tournament being played every month of the year. All the tournaments are played on the basis of individual stroke-play and are generally 36-hole events. The national tournament is played over 54 holes.
These events count for a nationally-organised Order of Merit, from which a national, representative side is chosen.
Sasaga has also developed strong ties with its counterpart organisation in Britain and the United States, especially Britain..
Twice in the last four years, Sasaga has sent official teams to play in the British Seniors Amateur Open Championships and to compete in a test match against a British representative side at the same time. Representative teams from Britain have also toured South Africa to play in major events and to take on a South African Senior Amateur team.
While the main thrust of Sasaga is to cater for scratch golf, it also provides a forum for handicap golfers. The B Division of Sasaga tournaments caters for players with handicaps of 10 and over and is played in the individual stableford format. The Association also caters for even older golfers, having created a division in all its events for ³Super Seniors², those aged 60 and over.
As a result, the Association¹s national tournament can attract up to 300 players and has to be played on two courses.
In 2010, the event is being played at the end of October at Rand Park Golf Club in Johannesburg.
Sasaga is an integral part of the South African Golf Association (SAGA), the ruling body of golf in South Africa. It is highly-organised and run by an elected executive committee made up of representatives from all the regions of the country. It is open to all affiliated golfers in South African who are 50 years and over.
